Niederegger Classic Marzipan Assortment
Niederegger Classic Marzipan Assortment
Niederegger has made marzipan in Lübeck since 1806, and Lübeck is where marzipan is from in the way that Champagne is where champagne is from. The city's name on the box is a protected designation, not a flourish.
What separates it is the almond proportion and the roasting — the almonds are roasted over open flame before they are ground, which is where the depth comes from. Cheap marzipan tastes of sugar and almond extract. This tastes of almonds.
Twenty-four pieces, individually wrapped, in six varieties: classic in dark chocolate, classic in milk, pistachio, orange, pineapple — and four of espresso, which is why it is on this shelf rather than in a chocolate shop.
The espresso pieces are the ones to eat alongside a cup rather than after it. Marzipan is sweet and dense enough to want something bitter against it, and a dark roast does the work that a light one cannot.
Contains a small amount of alcohol, under one percent by volume, from the arrack used in the fruit varieties. Worth knowing rather than worrying about.
300 grams. Kosher.
