The Market Gardener: A Successful Grower's Handbook for Small-Scale Organic Farming

The Market Gardener: A Successful Grower's Handbook for Small-Scale Organic Farming

Jean-Martin Fortier and his wife built a market garden in Quebec on about an acre and a half, and made it pay well enough to support a family. The Market Gardener is the manual for how they did it.

It is a business book disguised as a gardening book. Fortier covers choosing a site, laying out permanent beds, picking hand tools and small machines that earn their keep, planning succession plantings, and deciding which crops are worth the bed space by what they return. Everything is measured against labour and margin, and the scale is deliberately small: intensive work on little land, with low capital and no debt for big equipment.

It is Small Is Beautiful put into practice by a working grower. Pair it with the soil probes in our Terroir collection, which tell a market gardener when a bed is warm and moist enough to plant, and with Good Earth MCP for frost dates and planting windows.
