Before you buy: this probe cannot reach the internet by itself, and it needs an Ambient Weather console rather than an Ecowitt gateway. It reports by radio to an Ambient Weather WS-1965, WS-2000, WS-4000 or WS-5000 station, and that station puts its readings on AmbientWeather.net. Buy it together with the Ambient Weather WS-2000, which needs Wi-Fi and an outlet within radio range of your beds. If your plot has only cellular coverage and sun, choose the ECOWITT WittField 4G & Solar Field Weather Station with ECOWITT WH51 probes instead.
The WH31SM is a wireless soil moisture probe that you push into a bed, a row or a pot. One console listens to up to sixteen of them, each on its own channel, and each reports roughly every minute and a quarter.
Out in the field. The probe needs no cable, so it can sit out in the plot rather than beside the house. Ambient puts its range at about 300 feet in the open and roughly 100 feet through ordinary obstacles, so keep the console's building within that distance of your beds.
The readings go to the free AmbientWeather.net service, which serves them back through a documented REST API keyed to your own application and API keys. FieldData MCP reads Ambient Weather accounts as well as Ecowitt, so your scripts and AI agents can read your beds' moisture in SI units alongside any other station, and Good Earth MCP can set it beside its projections for your block.
Ambient Weather and Ecowitt stations are widely reported to share a manufacturer, so the two families measure much the same things. They differ in their consoles, their cloud services and their APIs, so choose one family per station.
